The Educator’s Experience of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)

Demand avoidance (resistance to doing something that is requested or expected of you) is experienced by everyone at certain times. However, some people have characteristics of persistent and marked resistance to the demands present in everyday life. This is referred to as Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). Limited research into PDA has meant that students exhibiting these characteristics, who often also have Autism, have been misunderstood as naughty, defiant, or disruptive in the school environment.

This presentation, delivered by guest presenter Laura Kerbey, will provide commentary and insights regarding PDA and how to support students who experience PDA in the classroom and school environment:

  • Understanding what Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is and how it differs from other autistic presentations.
  • Understanding effective communication approaches when working with students with PDA
  • Removing the barriers to learning that students with PDA face.
